SHOM – Brest
The new building of the SHOM, the department of hydrography and oceanography of the French Ministry of Armed Forces in the city of Brest, is characterised by eight-shaped plan. This organisation allows four different services to unfold as loops and join each other in the same entrance hall. It defines to interior gardens. The building works as an articulation at the scale of the site, among various existing buildings. Its horizontality contrasts with the hilly landscape. The uniform treatment of the facades as well as the multiple accesses respond to the opportunity to create a multi-oriented building. The vertical rhythm of the curtain facade underlines the sloppy topography. The loop-like organisation and the repetitive structure tend to provide together a new unity to the site.
