Four houses – Tokyo

This study was conducted with the Japanese Tato/Yo Shimada office as a response to a housing program situated in the outskirts of Tokyo. The project consists of a shared house that can be divided into smaller units to accommodate four private homes, together with a shared community space. This shared space is accessible to residents and to the local community. The house forms a cross-structure that makes it possible to divide the house into four triplex units. A system of staircases also offers the option to divide each of these units into smaller apartments. In each scenario, units can be accessed individually, rather than via an entrance hall, so that residents feel that they are living in a private home, while sharing a larger structure.
